Orange Spice Turmeric Tea (and The Benefits of Turmeric)

Orange Spice Turmeric Tea (and The Benefits of Turmeric)

This isn’t my first rondevue with turmeric and making turmeric milk/tea. About a month ago I posted a simple recipe for Basic Turmeric Milk that I quickly fell in love with. Overall, that recipe was very basic and just combined the earthy flavor of turmeric with sweet and floral honey. Since then I have tweaked a few ingredients and added some local and in season foods

This new recipe for Orange Spice Turmeric Tea not only uses the healing power of turmeric, but it also combines the spicy flavor of real ginger with fresh orange and honey. It is a cup of deliciousness that will heal, balance and rejuvenate.

If you haven’t noticed, turmeric is the hot new food/herb/root that is popping up all over the social media scene and internet. That being said, I thought it was time to really put the spotlight on turmeric and give you the low down from an RD point of view.

One of the main compounds found in turmeric is Curcumin, which is responsible for it’s bright orange color as well as the amazing anti-inflammatory and health properties. There are other healthy and healing compounds in turmeric, however curcumin is the most studied and the most recognized.

When it’s orange season I use this delicious fruit with everything and in everything I possibly can. I mean, its not often that you can get delicious and in-season fruit that looks like a little piece of sunshine, and tastes like it too. Adding the fresh orange zest and juice as well as the fresh ginger and honey was undoubtedly the right decision for this blissful beverage. The perfect combination of vitamin c and beta-carotene boosting orange, healing and spicy ginger, sweet local honey, earthy turmeric and a little milk gives me reason to believe this drink is actually liquid gold.

Herbal Cure: Turmeric Can Help Fight Colon Cancer

Turmeric, a yellow indian spice commonly used as a food coloring, is already known to treat many health problems such as liver disorder, bacterial infections in wounds, eye disorders and many other conditions.

Now a new study from Belgium shows that a compound in turmeric has the potential to treat and prevent colon cancer, thanks to its medicinal properties.

In fact, the study suggests that a combination of two plant compounds – curcumin (an active ingredient in turmeric) and silymarin (a compound naturally found in milk thistle) – can effectively ward off colorectal cancer cells.

According to the study’s findings, both compounds, when used individually, were effective in preventing spread of colon cancer cells, but a combo-pack of them showed a synergistic effect against the colorectal cancer cells.

“A single phytochemical at high concentration may exhibit anticancer activity,” observed the Saint Louis University researchers while conducting a lab test in a line of colon cancer cells. “By combining two phytochemicals, anticancer activity at much lower doses has been sought.”

For the lab test, researchers used three different human colon cancer cell lines and treated them with varying doses of curcumin, silymarin, and a combo of curcumin and silymarin. Cell proliferation (increase in the number of cells) and apoptosis (a process of programmed cell death) were assessed after treating the cells with the compounds.

The research team observed a significant difference between single compound-treated cells and cells treated with a combo of both compounds. They found cells treated with either phytochemical alone had low levels of apoptosis, while treating the cells first with curcumin and then with silymarin resulted in an increased cell death, thus was more effective in fighting cancer.

turmeric curcumin fights colon cancer cells

“The combination of phytochemicals inhibited colon cancer cells from multiplying and spreading. In addition, when the colon cancer cells were pre-exposed to curcumin and then treated with silymarin, the cells underwent a high amount of cell death,” said study author Dr. Uthayashanker Ezekiel, from Saint Louis University.

Phytochemicals may offer alternate therapeutic approaches to cancer treatments and avoid toxicity problems and side effects that chemotherapy can cause,” Ezekiel added.

The researchers acknowledge theirs is a preliminary cell study and more research is to be done before determining the curcumin and silymarin are an effective treatment for colon cancer patients.

“Future studies will explore the NF-kB (nuclear factor-kappa beta) and apoptotic pathways to understand synergistic effects of curcumin and silymarin on colon cancer cells,” they conclude.

The research findings appear in the Journal of Cancer.

How Much Turmeric Should You Be Taking?

How Much Turmeric Should You Be Taking?

How Much Turmeric Should You Be Taking?
What Is The Correct Turmeric Dosage?

According to the medical community, about 2,000mg is the maximum amount of standardized turmeric curcumin you should take per day. When cooking with ground turmeric powder, the University of Maryland recommends 1 to 3 grams per day. One gram of ground turmeric powder is about ½ teaspoon.

The recommended dosage of Turmeric and the methods of consumption are as follows:

How:  When possible take Turmeric with some fat or oil as it is lipophilic (oil soluble).  I use coconut oil most often. In the morning simply eating whole eggs and bacon provides plenty of necessary fat.

How much:  For adults the official recommendation is up to 1.5 g. daily which will be about one very slightly rounded teaspoon which can be divided over two to three doses daily.  Therapeutic doses are considered to be 2-3 g. See cautions below.  Not recommended for small children under two.  For older children and those over 65, start with a low dose. There are varying opinions as to the dosage and confusion between the active ingredient curcumin and Turmeric doses.

Tea:  I don’t recommend taking Turmeric as a tea.  It will stain everything.  Some people like to take it in warm milk with honey (Golden Milk) or hot cocoa.

Capsules:  Turmeric Curcumin (Curcumin is the active ingredient in Turmeric) is available in capsule form. It’s readily available and easy to take.

Food:  A great way to take it, a curry is perhaps the best food method – but do you eat curry daily and with medicinal amounts of turmeric? I doubt it.  However, I have added turmeric throughout the day in my yogurt, soups, salad dressings and other dishes. Nobody wants to eat Turmeric in every meal which is why the capsules are such a wonderful and easy alternative.

Fat/oil:  This is my modus operandi and part of my morning routine.  Two teaspoons of coconut oil (turns solid in winter so I warm it a little) to one teaspoon of turmeric which will equal the recommended dose of  1g daily.  I add a good few turns of black pepper. This is most likely about 1/8 teaspoon.

Proline Organic Turmeric Dosage

Caution regarding therapeutic doses:

It is worth considering that many people have successfully either weaned themselves off chemical drugs or at least lowered the doses over time. This also means, avoided the inevitable side effects of long term pharmaceuticals.

Warning!  Super food turmeric may seriously improve your health.  Read more about turmeric benefits – Spice:  Turmeric – Beyond Curry

Be sure to purchase your herb and spices from non-irradiated, organic and reliable sources for the full health benefit.  Grocery store herbs are good enough for seasoning but most likely have been radiated.  One company I have come to trust is “Simply Organic”.

Therapeutic doses of most any herbal preparation is seldom intended for long term use and were never intended to be used in that way.  Obviously, long term chemical ‘solutions’ have also negative effects.  Many herbalists and Naturopathic practitioners recommend taking breaks of a few weeks from any long term herb use.  However, some people eventually ease themselves off of pharmaceuticals and are happy with the results using natural methods and just as importantly, a healthier lifestyle.

Turmeric Curcumin: A Potential Powerhouse for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Turmeric Curcumin: A Potential Powerhouse for Rheumatoid Arthritis

In conventional practices, NSAIDs and glucocorticoids are used the most frequently for RA treatment, but they also bring with them a host of side effects, especially in long-term use. Possible adverse effects include stomach and liver damage, allergic reactions, lowered immunity, increased blood pressure, lowered red blood cell activity (myelosuppression), and increased risk of osteoporosis.1,2 Worse yet, even though they help control pain and inflammation, they really only cover the problem for a while. Beyond stopping some of the inflammation, they still can’t stop the joint damage of RA, or lower attendant depression, or address other chronic conditions that can easily present alongside RA. So, aside from some temporary relief, they are essentially “one-note” forms of treatment.I think one of the most difficult things for any practitioner is treating chronic conditions that have left a patient feeling frustrated, helpless, and at the mercy of synthetic drugs that can bring a wake of terrible side effects. As an autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) falls into a category of illness that is typically difficult to treat conventionally beyond symptom control and – if caught early enough – a slowdown in joint destruction.

The fact that these measures cannot actually stop RA is the difficult part. As any practitioner knows, RA doesn’t just make people feel bad. Left untreated, or improperly treated, it can destroy a life. In especially difficult cases, untreated RA patients may see permanent disability in as little as 3 years following a diagnosis.1,3

This presents a real challenge for natural practitioners, and I think we can do better. Timing is critical: according to a 2011 study published in Clinical Rheumatology,3 the earlier the intervention, the better; however, about 30% of those with the most severe forms of the disease don’t respond to conventional treatments at all.1

Exactly why the body tricks itself into fighting its own tissues in RA is still not proven, though there are strong indications that intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) plays a powerful role in the development of this disease.4 In a healthy system, the body achieves a homeostasis with regards to the immune system; it runs at a pleasantly “lukewarm” temperature, so to speak. That’s as it should be – just enough to keep viruses and other threats at bay, but not to be on overdrive. Of course, that’s the very problem with RA. The balance is completely off, and the body’s own defenses spin out of control against itself.5

Fortunately, there is hope for healing without complications. It is a compound from an herbal source known to practitioners of traditional Indian and Chinese medicine for generations: curcumin from turmeric (Curcuma longa).

Without a doubt, curcumin is well known to practitioners here in the United States too. And certainly, I’m sure that more than a few reading this column have used it for fighting pain. But I believe that it could be a complete RA-fighting herbal powerhouse unto itself.

Consider this study, published in Phytotherapy Research. In this randomized 8-week study, 45 participants were randomized to 3 groups.1 All of them had been diagnosed with RA, functional class I or II. Group 1 received diclofenac sodium, 50 mg BID; group 2 received 500 mg BID of an enhanced-absorption curcumin that also contains turmerones from turmeric essential oil; and group 3 received both diclofenac sodium and the curcumin. In both curcumin groups, there were no drop-outs due to adverse effects; however, in the diclofenac sodium-only group, 14% withdrew due to adverse effects.1

Before and after participation, a full check of kidney and liver function, blood sugar, and a complete blood count were performed. There were no significant changes in these measurements, in general, in all of the groups. One laboratory analysis adverse event was reported in the drug (diclofenac sodium) group.1

In the Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS28) assessment, the curcumin-only group showed the best results for disease symptom reduction, followed by the combination therapy of curcumin with diclofenac sodium. Interestingly, the diclofenac sodium-only group scored in last place. So, was curcumin the heavy-lifter here? After all, it was more effective than diclofenac sodium at reducing joint pain and swelling. Taking the curcumin with the drug was no more effective than using the botanical alone, and taking the drug alone was the least effective.1

Aside from those direct symptom changes, the curcumin-only group also showed improvement over others in reducing C-reactive protein (CRP), a measure of chronic inflammation, as well as anti-streptococcal antibodies (ASO) titers, which correlate with severity of RA activity.1

Diclofenac is one of the most commonly prescribed conventional drugs on the planet. Diclofenac sodium is widely used for RA treatment,6 so it was an easy choice for comparison’s sake. And, to be certain, I’d love to see more clinical comparisons regarding curcumin, prescription drugs, and RA. But this is still very impressive.

Now, if the idea of recommending curcumin for RA was only about promoting safe pain relief and stopping joint destruction (as if that isn’t enough), this compound can also relieve one of the worst aspects of RA: depression.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), there is a “high prevalence of anxiety and depression… documented in several clinical populations of people with RA.”7 They also mention that the presence of anxiety and depression often means that people tend to not adhere to their prescribed course of treatments. The benefit of finding a natural therapy for RA and depression seems like a perfect fit for any practitioner. Here too, curcumin shows its versatility.

In a clinical study, patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) showed the greatest response using a combination of fluoxetine and high-absorption curcumin enhanced with turmeric essential oil – a 77.8% response rate, as measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17).8

What I find interesting is that the single-therapy groups’ scores were virtually identical: fluoxetine at 64.7%, and curcumin at 62.5%. Ie, curcumin essentially worked as well as the prescription drug, fluoxetine, in terms of the measurable changes in the HAMD-17 score from baseline to 6 weeks of treatment, but without side effects.8

In another placebo-controlled study, high-absorption curcumin enhanced with turmeric essential oil showed antidepressant effects in people with MDD 4-8 weeks after treatment.9 Related research found that 500 mg BID of curcumin influenced biomarkers that appear to be associated with depression, including leptin and endothelin-1, and reduced their effects over an 8-wk period.10

How can curcumin do so much to impact multiple conditions? The answer is that it works along many pathways, whereas synthetic drugs typically work along only 1. Instead of fighting on a narrow front (and incurring side effects along the way), curcumin works widely and deeply to:

Additionally, a Japanese cultured-cell study found that curcumin inhibits histone acetyltransferase, which ultimately helps lower the activity of interleukin (IL)-6, an inflammatory cytokine and causal factor in RA (IL-6 is seen in higher levels in the synovial fibroblasts of RA).11

So, curcumin has plenty of mechanisms of action to support its use. And, in an easily absorbable form, you won’t have to worry about side effects or dosage levels that are too challenging for patient compliance.

Curcumin also shows remarkable potential to relieve inflammatory bowel disease, making it a perfect agent for countering conditions leading to leaky gut syndrome. In a small clinical study, patients with ulcerative proctitis and Crohn’s disease received daily curcumin.12 The patients with ulcerative proctitis were also taking prescription medications; however, by the end of the 2-month study period, 2 participants were able to stop taking 1 of their prescriptions altogether (including prednisone), and 2 others reduced their dosages. Inflammation levels returned to normal as well. Patients with Crohn’s disease who completed the study (4 out of 5) showed significant improvement, including less frequent bowel movements, less pain and cramping, and better-formed stools.12

The curcumin used in the RA and depression studies was naturally enhanced with turmeric essential oils to boost absorption beyond that of standard 95% extracts, which can necessitate high dosages and cause gastric discomfort. This blending with turmeric oils seems to extend curcumin’s retention time in the plasma, and at significant levels.13 In practical terms, this means that whether recommending for RA or attendant depression, the dosage could be as little as 1000 mg daily in 2 divided doses – definitely an easy level for patient compliance.1,8,9,10

When people suffering from RA first come to my office, they feel frustrated and adrift because they feel powerless over the pain and soreness of the disease. Curcumin’s potential as part of a natural treatment plan for RA is astounding. Numbers from the CDC show that there are 1.5 million Americans with RA,8 so we have our work cut out for us. But having curcumin in our corner makes the fight much easier to win.

The All Natural Heartburn Relief Recipe

Do you stash bottles of antacids in your car, office and home? Or do you experience less frequent but still very uncomfortable bouts of heartburn? Then your body is telling you something… and the message is NOT to take a swig of liquid antacid medication or pop some pills.

Both acid blockers and antacids, the common treatments for heartburn, actually perpetuate a vicious cycle of attack on your poor esophageal lining. That’s because heartburn results from too little stomach acid, not too much. Counterintuitive, right? But it’s biology, folks.

Stress and poor diet reduce gastric juices instead of increasing gastric juice. That is one reason why we see skyrocketing numbers of heartburn sufferers in our stressed and unhealthy world. This low stomach acid not only leads to heartburn but also bloating, hormone problems, peeling nails, thinning hair, gas, constipation and more.

Acid reducers and acid blockers further lower our stomach acid. This reduces the sensation of heartburn by making the stomach contents more alkaline, but it doesn’t prevent the stomach contents from leaking into the esophagus. And the more alkaline the food in the stomach, the less it gets digested and the more problems it causes when it goes lower down into the digestive tract.

When our stomach is producing adequate acid, then the valve at the top of the stomach is signaled to close tightly, preventing the acidic contents from leaking into the esophagus. This heartburn remedy helps signal the stomach to close this valve.

This effective and natural heartburn remedy works the opposite way of Tums or Gaviscon or [insert heartburn medication of your choice here]. It makes the stomach more acid, not less acid. This signals the valve at the top of the stomach to close and the valve at the bottom of the stomach to open – so food goes down, not up!

2 tsp. raw apple cider vinegar, such as [eafl id=1293 name=”Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar – Article Link” text=”Bragg’s”]
1/4 – 1/2 cup filtered water (I recommend [eafl id=1053 name=”Perfect Water Purifier – articleLink2″ text=”this Water Purifier”], which eliminates toxic fluoride and chlorine)

acv-heartburn-recipe

Mix together and drink at the first sign of heartburn. You can continue to take this every 5-10 minutes until you have relief, but one serving usually takes action within just three minutes. If it tastes too sour for you, add a teaspoon of RAW (also called unpasteurized) honey or reduce the vinegar to 1 tsp. Otherwise, just gulp it down.

For best results, take this with every meal and between every meal to help prevent heartburn.

Anti-Inflammatory Reboot

Inflammation is holding us back in so many ways, and no one is really explaining it to us. All we know is that it’s “bad,” but no one wants to tell us about how it’s keeping us from losing weight and how it’s making us feel like garbage. Mainly because the food lobbyists don’t want us to dip into their profits when we find out that inflammation is caused by most of the so-called healthy foods that we are eating now!

Thomas DeLauer Before After Diet Pics

*IMPORTANT: My results are not typical. As with any weight loss program, your results may vary greatly.

When I was 275lbs and struggling with my weight, the last thing that I thought about was inflammation causing my problems… I had always resorted to the basics… simple calories in vs. calories out to lose weight, BUT that was NOT the case here. There was something bigger at play because I was literally doing everything that I was ‘supposed’ to do.

Dangerous GMO corn

Meanwhile, my wife was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease that effected her thyroid (hashimoto’s) and later, Lyme disease. It was the serendipitous timing of this that made me realize that inflammation might be playing a larger role then I had thought. I’m sure many of you have heard of these diseases, and the scary thing is that they can be affecting you and you might not even know it!

To make a very long story short, I began learning about inflammation, using my resources within the healthcare industry to dive into some heavy research on how inflammation works and how it could be holding my wife and I (and others) from living the lives that we wanted to live. Like so many others, it’s easy to not even realize you’re being held back.

I found that inflammation can cause all kinds of issues in the digestive tract making it so that you’re not absorbing nutrients. This was a HUGE step, because I WAS eating healthy, but I couldn’t lose weight at all! So when I realized that there were specific “health foods” that I was eating that were causing this to happen, it all made sense….

read more: Learn what these health foods are

If you’re not absorbing nutrients, then you body goes into starvation mode and that means that you will store fat! It’s a simple survival mechanism! This was the code that needed to be cracked! I needed to find a way to reduce the activity of the COX-1 enzyme and the production of prostaglandins (a fancy way of saying ‘how inflammation is caused”)

Thomas DeLauer Diet Plan

But the difficulty was finding a way to rid my body of the inflammation so that I could begin absorbing nutrients again. And back then, this was a long drawn out process, simply because the science wasn’t really there at the time. Most of us don’t really have the time or the energy to devote to experimenting with different foods to find what works for them.

Well, I did reduce my inflammation, and I was able to get back on track and ultimately become on author on this very topic, but it took a lot of time.

So over the past six months, using my experiences and my research I have developed a way to reduce inflammation within the body and to help the body absorb nutrients again, all with a WHOLE FOODS approach. As someone that has been in the healthcare industry before, I wanted to make sure this was a down-to-earth way to reduce inflammation.

Anyhow, it has been awesome to see how many people have been having success and not just reducing inflammation, but truly losing weight and kick starting their new lives feeling utterly amazing!

I want to invite you to take a look at the full protocol and the actual program and steps that you need to take right here

Just seeing some of the pain being lifted from people and seeing them realize what had been causing them so much grief before…

Anti-Bloat Smoothie Recipe

Anti-Bloat Smoothie Recipe

Let’s face it. Some of the healthiest foods on the planet can cause some serious bloat. I’m looking at you, broccoli. Sorry lentils, I love you, but you aren’t doing my stomach any favors.

Now, I would never cut those healthy foods out of my diet just because they cause me to get bloated. I just am careful not to eat them before I’m going out on a date night with my hubby. Or any time I want to wear something that isn’t loose.

The good news is, just as there are foods that can cause bloating, there are also some foods that can fight the bloat. I stuffed a whole bunch of anti-bloating foods into a smoothie. Why? For those times when you need something to eat, but really don’t want a bloated stomach.

Let’s take a look at what’s inside this smoothie and why it won’t cause you to bloat.

Cucumbers: They are loaded with water, which helps fight bloating.

Banana: Bananas are high in potassium. Potassium helps regulate sodium levels, which prevents water retention. Too much sodium is a big cause of bloating, so that’s why bananas (and other foods high in potassium) help with bloating.

Coconut Water: Like bananas, coconut water is high in potassium.

Ginger: Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory food as well as a digestive aid. It soothes the digestive system and relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract, which keeps you from getting bloated. You know I love my ginger. Take a look at that huge hunk of fresh ginger in the picture below. I eat one of those per week.

Apple Cider Vinegar: I list this one as optional in the smoothie recipe because the smoothie absolutely tastes better without it. Apple cider vinegar, however, is a rock star for reducing gas and bloating. So if you are super serious about reducing your bloat, add this to your smoothie.

The taste of this anti-bloating smoothie is fresh. I love the cucumber and ginger together, and the banana sweetens it up just enough. The coconut water flavor is subtle, not overpowering. I really don’t love coconut water on its own, but do love it in my smoothies. It’s filled with electrolytes, so it’s a great naturally hydrating beverage choice. If you choose to add the apple cider vinegar it muddles the flavor a bit, but is still good.

May your days be bloat-free, friends!

Turmeric Smoothie – So Tasty You Won’t Believe It Has One of the Most Powerful Antioxidants In The World!

Powdered turmeric has been used for centuries to treat a host of illnesses. It inhibits inflammatory reactions, has anti-diabetic effects, and reduces cholesterol among other powerful health effects.

A recent study, led by a research team in Munich, showed that it can also hinder formation of metastases.

Turmeric has a slightly bitter taste. By blending it with sweet fruit, you won’t even notice it in your smoothie. This recipe is so tasty and nutritious, you could have it daily.

Who needs chemical medications when nature gave us turmeric?

It is a blood purifier, digestive aid, anti-inflammatory, wound healer, skin tonic, analgesic, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic, anti-carcinogenic, fat metabolizer, cholesterol reducer, gas reducer, expectorant, and more.

Curcumin, the natural pigment that gives the spice turmeric its yellow color, has increasingly come under the scientific spotlight in recent years, with studies investigating its vast health benefits.

One of the most comprehensive summaries of turmeric benefits studies to date was published by the respected ethnobotanist James A. Duke, Phd., in the October, 2007 issue of Alternative & Complementary Therapies, and summarized in the July, 2008, issue of the American Botanical Council publication HerbClip.

Reviewing some 700 studies, Duke concluded that turmeric appears to outperform many pharmaceuticals in its effects against several chronic, debilitating diseases, and does so with virtually no adverse side effects.

Turmeric’s proven benefits

Here are some of the diseases that turmeric has been found to help prevent or alleviate:

Alzheimer’s disease: Duke found more than 50 studies on turmeric’s effects in addressing this terrible disease. The reports indicate that extracts of turmeric contain a number of natural agents that block the formation of beta-amyloid, the substance responsible for the plaques that slowly obstruct cerebral function in Alzheimer’s disease.

Arthritis: Turmeric contains more than two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds, including six different COX-2-inhibitors (the COX-2 enzyme promotes pain, swelling and inflammation; inhibitors selectively block that enzyme). By itself, writes Duke, curcumin – the component in turmeric most often cited for its healthful effects – is a multifaceted anti-inflammatory agent, and studies of the efficacy of curcumin have demonstrated positive changes in arthritic symptoms.

Cancer: Duke found more than 200 citations for turmeric benefits related to cancer and more than 700 for curcumin and cancer. He noted that in the handbook Phytochemicals: Mechanisms of Action, curcumin and/or turmeric were effective in animal models in prevention and/or treatment of colon cancer, mammary cancer, prostate cancer, murine hepato-carcinogenesis (liver cancer in rats), esophageal cancer, and oral cancer. Duke said that the effectiveness of the herb against these cancers compared favorably with that reported for pharmaceuticals.
