The Real Reasons Apple Cider Vinegar Works for Weight Loss

The Real Reasons Apple Cider Vinegar Works for Weight Loss

Apple cider vinegar is fantastic for all sorts of ailments, but not because of it’s nutritional content, but from the ability to acidify the body. It contains Ascetic acid, the key ingredient at a pH of 2.5. I will help in the transportation of minerals, esp. calcium, the digestion of protein, the stimulation of thyroid function. Interestingly, due to the common excessive alkalinity a good portion of the population has, apple cider vinegar is a safe and healthy solution.

Alkalosis: Causes, Types & Symptoms

Your blood is made up of acids and bases. The amount of acids and bases in your blood can be measured on a pH scale. It’s important to maintain the correct balance between acids and bases. Even a slight change can cause health problems. Normally, your blood should have a slightly higher level of bases than acids.

Alkalosis occurs when your body has too many bases. It can occur due to decreased blood levels of carbon dioxide, which is an acid. It can also occur due to increased blood levels of bicarbonate, which is a base.

This condition may also be related to other underlying health issues, such as low potassium, or hypokalemia. The earlier it’s detected and treated, the better its outcome is.

There are five main types of alkalosis

Respiratory alkalosis occurs when there isn’t enough carbon dioxide in your bloodstream. It’s often caused by:

  • hyperventilation, which commonly occurs with anxiety
  • high fever
  • lack of oxygen
  • salicylate poisoning
  • being in high altitudes
  • liver disease
  • lung disease

Metabolic alkalosis develops when your body loses too much acid or gains too much base. This can be attributed to:

  • excess vomiting, which causes a loss of electrolytes
  • overuse of diuretics
  • adrenal disease
  • a large loss of potassium or sodium in a short amount of time
  • antacids
  • accidental ingestion of bicarbonate, which can be found in baking soda
  • laxatives
  • alcohol abuse

Hypochloremic alkalosis occurs when there’s a significant decline of chloride in your body. This can be due to prolonged vomiting or sweating. Chloride is an important chemical needed to maintain balance in bodily fluids, and it’s an essential part of your body’s digestive fluids.

Hypokalemic alkalosis occurs when your body lacks the normal amount of the mineral potassium. You normally get potassium from your food, but potassium deficiency is rarely caused by not eating enough of it. Kidney disease, excessive sweating, and diarrhea are just a few ways you can lose too much potassium. Potassium is essential to the proper functioning of the:

  • heart
  • kidneys
  • muscles
  • nervous system
  • digestive system

Symptoms of alkalosis can vary. In the early stages of the condition, you may have:

  • nausea
  • numbness
  • prolonged muscle spasms
  • muscle twitching
  • hand tremor

If it isn’t treated right away, severe symptoms can develop. These symptoms could lead to shock or coma. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • dizziness
  • difficulty breathing
  • confusion
  • stupor
  • coma

The symptoms of alkalosis mimic symptoms of other conditions. It’s very important that you don’t attempt to diagnose yourself. Make an appointment with your doctor to get evaluated.

Your doctor will ask you about your medical history and the symptoms you’ve been having. They will likely order tests that will rule out other conditions. Common tests include:

  • urinalysis
  • urine pH
  • basic metabolic panel
  • arterial blood gas analysis

According to the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, normal blood pH levels are between 7.35 and 7.45. A blood pH above 7.45 may indicate alkalosis.

Your doctor may also want to measure the carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in your blood to rule out respiratory issues.

Your treatment plan will depend on the cause of your alkalosis. Your carbon dioxide level needs to return to normal if you have respiratory alkalosis. If you have rapid breathing caused by anxiety, taking slow, deep breaths can often improve symptoms and regulate your oxygen level. If tests reveal that you have a low oxygen level, you’ll need to receive oxygen through a mask.

If your rapid breathing is caused by pain, then treating the pain will help bring your respiratory rate to normal and improve your symptoms.

If your alkalosis is caused by a loss of chemicals such as chloride or potassium, you’ll be prescribed medications or supplements to replace these chemicals.

Some cases of alkalosis result from an electrolyte imbalance, which may be corrected by drinking plenty of fluids or drinks that contain electrolytes. If you have an advanced case of electrolyte imbalance, it will need to be treated in the hospital.

Most people recover from alkalosis once they get treatment.

Reduce your risk for developing alkalosis by maintaining good health, eating a healthy diet, and staying hydrated. Choosing foods high in nutrients and potassium can help combat electrolyte deficiencies. Nutrients and potassium are primarily found in fruits and vegetables, such as:

  • carrots
  • bananas
  • milk
  • beans
  • spinach
  • bran

Steps you can take to prevent dehydration include:

  • drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day
  • drinking water before, during, and after exercise
  • using electrolyte-replacement drinks for high-intensity exercises
  • avoiding sodas or juices, which have a high sugar content and can make dehydration worse
  • limiting caffeine, which is found in soda, tea, and coffee

It’s important to remember that you’re already dehydrated if you feel thirsty.

Dehydration can also occur rapidly if you lose a lot of electrolytes. This can happen when you’re vomiting from the flu. If you cannot keep potassium-rich foods in your stomach, make sure you still drink adequate fluids, such as water, sports drinks, and broth-based soups.

The outlook for alkalosis largely depends on how soon it’s diagnosed. The sooner your condition is treated, the better the outcome is for that condition. Alkalosis caused by existing kidney conditions may not be preventable. It’s also important to follow all of your doctor’s care instructions once you get a diagnosis.

The All Natural Heartburn Relief Recipe

Do you stash bottles of antacids in your car, office and home? Or do you experience less frequent but still very uncomfortable bouts of heartburn? Then your body is telling you something… and the message is NOT to take a swig of liquid antacid medication or pop some pills.

Both acid blockers and antacids, the common treatments for heartburn, actually perpetuate a vicious cycle of attack on your poor esophageal lining. That’s because heartburn results from too little stomach acid, not too much. Counterintuitive, right? But it’s biology, folks.

Stress and poor diet reduce gastric juices instead of increasing gastric juice. That is one reason why we see skyrocketing numbers of heartburn sufferers in our stressed and unhealthy world. This low stomach acid not only leads to heartburn but also bloating, hormone problems, peeling nails, thinning hair, gas, constipation and more.

Acid reducers and acid blockers further lower our stomach acid. This reduces the sensation of heartburn by making the stomach contents more alkaline, but it doesn’t prevent the stomach contents from leaking into the esophagus. And the more alkaline the food in the stomach, the less it gets digested and the more problems it causes when it goes lower down into the digestive tract.

When our stomach is producing adequate acid, then the valve at the top of the stomach is signaled to close tightly, preventing the acidic contents from leaking into the esophagus. This heartburn remedy helps signal the stomach to close this valve.

This effective and natural heartburn remedy works the opposite way of Tums or Gaviscon or [insert heartburn medication of your choice here]. It makes the stomach more acid, not less acid. This signals the valve at the top of the stomach to close and the valve at the bottom of the stomach to open – so food goes down, not up!

2 tsp. raw apple cider vinegar, such as [eafl id=1293 name=”Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar – Article Link” text=”Bragg’s”]
1/4 – 1/2 cup filtered water (I recommend [eafl id=1053 name=”Perfect Water Purifier – articleLink2″ text=”this Water Purifier”], which eliminates toxic fluoride and chlorine)

acv-heartburn-recipe

Mix together and drink at the first sign of heartburn. You can continue to take this every 5-10 minutes until you have relief, but one serving usually takes action within just three minutes. If it tastes too sour for you, add a teaspoon of RAW (also called unpasteurized) honey or reduce the vinegar to 1 tsp. Otherwise, just gulp it down.

For best results, take this with every meal and between every meal to help prevent heartburn.

Creamy Cauliflower Soup Recipe to Die For!

Creamy Cauliflower Soup Recipe to Die For!

I’m never eating cauliflower in any other form from now on. Only in this soup recipe. It’s too good to waste cauliflower on anything else. If you’ve been looking for a delicious cauliflower soup recipe you’ve come to the right place. How is it that cauliflower can be made to taste so good?

I seriously had to put this soup away as soon as it cooled, because I kept slurping it from the ladle as I passed by. That’s when you know you’ve made a great soup. It’s luxurious and silky. This coconut-creamed cauliflower soup is infused with spices like cardamom, cumin, coriander, and turmeric. So good, it’s the only cauliflower soup you’ll ever want to make.

  • 1 Tbsp. olive or coconut oil
  • 2 medium yellow onions, diced
  • 1 bay leaf (don’t forget to pull it out before you blend the soup)
  • 1 1/4 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 tsp. ground turmeric (take turmeric everyday)
  • 1/2 tsp. ground coriander
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cardamom
  • dash of ground black pepper
  • sprinkling of crushed red pepper flakes
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 1/2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 large head of cauliflower, roughly chopped to the same size
  • 1 cup canned coconut milk
  • 1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • fresh dill (for garnish – optional)

In a large soup pot, heat the oil over medium-low. Add the onion and the spices, except for the garlic. Saute, stirring occasionally until the onions become translucent, about 10 minutes. Then, add the garlic and saute another few minutes.

Add the vegetable broth and cauliflower and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to a simmer and allow to cook for about 15 minutes, until the cauliflower is tender.

Remove from heat and transfer carefully to your Vitamix. Blend on high (allowing steam to vent) for a few minutes, until silky and smooth.

Transfer back to the soup pot and stir in the coconut milk and vinegar. Bring back to heat over low, ensuring it doesn’t boil.

Serve hot and topped with fresh dill and ground black pepper, if you like.

Anti-Bloat Smoothie Recipe

Anti-Bloat Smoothie Recipe

Let’s face it. Some of the healthiest foods on the planet can cause some serious bloat. I’m looking at you, broccoli. Sorry lentils, I love you, but you aren’t doing my stomach any favors.

Now, I would never cut those healthy foods out of my diet just because they cause me to get bloated. I just am careful not to eat them before I’m going out on a date night with my hubby. Or any time I want to wear something that isn’t loose.

The good news is, just as there are foods that can cause bloating, there are also some foods that can fight the bloat. I stuffed a whole bunch of anti-bloating foods into a smoothie. Why? For those times when you need something to eat, but really don’t want a bloated stomach.

Let’s take a look at what’s inside this smoothie and why it won’t cause you to bloat.

Cucumbers: They are loaded with water, which helps fight bloating.

Banana: Bananas are high in potassium. Potassium helps regulate sodium levels, which prevents water retention. Too much sodium is a big cause of bloating, so that’s why bananas (and other foods high in potassium) help with bloating.

Coconut Water: Like bananas, coconut water is high in potassium.

Ginger: Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory food as well as a digestive aid. It soothes the digestive system and relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract, which keeps you from getting bloated. You know I love my ginger. Take a look at that huge hunk of fresh ginger in the picture below. I eat one of those per week.

Apple Cider Vinegar: I list this one as optional in the smoothie recipe because the smoothie absolutely tastes better without it. Apple cider vinegar, however, is a rock star for reducing gas and bloating. So if you are super serious about reducing your bloat, add this to your smoothie.

The taste of this anti-bloating smoothie is fresh. I love the cucumber and ginger together, and the banana sweetens it up just enough. The coconut water flavor is subtle, not overpowering. I really don’t love coconut water on its own, but do love it in my smoothies. It’s filled with electrolytes, so it’s a great naturally hydrating beverage choice. If you choose to add the apple cider vinegar it muddles the flavor a bit, but is still good.

May your days be bloat-free, friends!

Here is the recipe for this amazing fat burning morning drink:

Use 12 ounces of warm filtered water (not HOT water).  Hot water will break down many of the essential properties of the majority of these ingredients including enzymes, minerals and vitamins.

Add juice from a half of a lemon

Add in 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

Add a dash of cayenne pepper to the beverage

Directions:

  • Always drink this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach when you first wake up.
  • Stir all of the ingredients together and drink the beverage immediately.
  • It is a good idea to drink this concoction through a straw so that you do not get all of the acids on your teeth that can cause damage, especially if you are drinking this every day.
  • Don’t eat anything else for 10 – 15 minutes so that you allow your body a chance to absorb all of the ingredients.

When you first begin drinking this mixture you may find it very tart and difficult to consume.  If necessary, add in a teaspoon of honey that will add a little bit of sweetness.  As you start to get used to the taste you can start to reduce the honey until you no longer need to add the honey.  This drink has a lot of major health benefits, and your body is going to appreciate it.  You may not like it at first, but once you make it a habit of drinking this daily, you are well on your way to enjoying the health benefits that this elixir provides.

5 Ways to use Apple Cider Vinegar

5 Ways to use Apple Cider Vinegar

For hundreds of years, vinegar has been used for various household and cleaning purposes as well as it’s healing and anti-aging properties.  The most popular vinegar among the health community, apple cider vinegar, is scientifically supported to ease gastrointestinal distress, aid in weight loss, lower blood sugar, and reduce symptoms of autoimmune disease, just to name a few. Apple cider vinegar is made by crushing organic apples and squeezing out the juice, then adding yeast and bacteria to the juice to start the fermentation process that gives ACV it’s digestive qualities. Then, even more bacteria is added in until the juice turns into the vinegar that we all know and love.

You can incorporate apple cider vinegar into your daily routine by simply mixing it with water for a natural topical solution, drinking a few tablespoons in your water or juice, adding it into your recipes, or, if you’re brave, simply sipping it straight out of the bottle (Shots! Shots! Shots! …Obviously, things get crazy in my house when there’s ACV around!). But just in case you are not convinced that you should be using this miracle substance on a daily basis, here are 5 more benefits to utilizing apple cider vinegar.

  • Fighting Dandruff – Okay, Snow White, there is hope for a dandruff free life! Long live the black shirts! All you need to do is mix equal parts water and ACV into a spray bottle. After shampooing, generously spritz the mixture onto your wet hair, let it sit for 2 minutes and rinse. The acidic environment of the ACV prevents dandruff causing fungus from forming and growing on your scalp. Easy and worth it, right?
  • Stopping a Sore Throat – With cold and flu season upon us, boosting your immune system is the best thing you can do to prevent calling in sick from work. If you start to feel a little tickle in your throat, simply mix 1 teaspoon. of ACV with a teaspoon of cayenne and a tablespoon honey to make a throat soothing elixir. The antibacterial properties of the honey and ACV is sure to arm your immune cells with the proper tools to fight off the cause of your sore throat, and the cayenne will work to alleviate the pain. As an added bonus, it’s also a fat burner!
  • Clear up your Skin – If you are suffering from oily skin, look no further! ACV is a natural astringent that pulls the impurities from your skin ad help reduce the oils, limiting your breakouts! The acidity also balances out the PH of your skin, keeping your skin feeling healthy and glowing. Simply use 1 part ACV to 1 part water, and dab it on your skin, focusing in your breakout areas.
  • Whiten your Teeth – If you have family portraits or an Instagram photoshoot going on in the near future, forget whitening gels or strips and pick up a bottle of ACV. Mix equal parts water and ACV, swish and spit, then brush and floss as usual. The acids found in ACV will help lift stains from the teeth, giving you a vibrant white smile. All that said, do use this with caution, as overuse of this technique can strip the enamel from your teeth. As they say, too much of any good thing can be a bad thing!
  • Digestive Balance – Last, but certainly not least, ACV is an incredible digestive aid, helping you absorb more nutrients from your food in addition to aiding you in weight loss! That’s because consuming ACV helps your body stimulate gastric juices that break down what you are eating even more, giving the villi in your intestines a better opportunity to grab the nutrients as they pass by. When you are absorbing these nutrients properly, your body runs smoothly and doesn’t crave vitamins and minerals that you are eating, but not able to utilize. This keeps your body out of starvation mode, meaning more fat loss and energy! Simply try mixing 1 Tbsp of ACV with a glass of water or tea before every meal to reduce uncomfortable bloating, constipation and aid in that nutrient uptake.

These five benefits of ACV are just a small handful selected from a seemingly never-ending list of proven apple cider vinegar uses that are both helpful and easy to incorporate into your daily routine. Be sure to check back for even more benefits of using ACV, including recipes and videos, and let us know your favorite ways to use apple cider vinegar in your home in the comments section below!
