The Real Reasons Apple Cider Vinegar Works for Weight Loss

The Real Reasons Apple Cider Vinegar Works for Weight Loss

Apple cider vinegar is fantastic for all sorts of ailments, but not because of it’s nutritional content, but from the ability to acidify the body. It contains Ascetic acid, the key ingredient at a pH of 2.5. I will help in the transportation of minerals, esp. calcium, the digestion of protein, the stimulation of thyroid function. Interestingly, due to the common excessive alkalinity a good portion of the population has, apple cider vinegar is a safe and healthy solution.

Alkalosis: Causes, Types & Symptoms

Your blood is made up of acids and bases. The amount of acids and bases in your blood can be measured on a pH scale. It’s important to maintain the correct balance between acids and bases. Even a slight change can cause health problems. Normally, your blood should have a slightly higher level of bases than acids.

Alkalosis occurs when your body has too many bases. It can occur due to decreased blood levels of carbon dioxide, which is an acid. It can also occur due to increased blood levels of bicarbonate, which is a base.

This condition may also be related to other underlying health issues, such as low potassium, or hypokalemia. The earlier it’s detected and treated, the better its outcome is.

There are five main types of alkalosis

Respiratory alkalosis occurs when there isn’t enough carbon dioxide in your bloodstream. It’s often caused by:

  • hyperventilation, which commonly occurs with anxiety
  • high fever
  • lack of oxygen
  • salicylate poisoning
  • being in high altitudes
  • liver disease
  • lung disease

Metabolic alkalosis develops when your body loses too much acid or gains too much base. This can be attributed to:

  • excess vomiting, which causes a loss of electrolytes
  • overuse of diuretics
  • adrenal disease
  • a large loss of potassium or sodium in a short amount of time
  • antacids
  • accidental ingestion of bicarbonate, which can be found in baking soda
  • laxatives
  • alcohol abuse

Hypochloremic alkalosis occurs when there’s a significant decline of chloride in your body. This can be due to prolonged vomiting or sweating. Chloride is an important chemical needed to maintain balance in bodily fluids, and it’s an essential part of your body’s digestive fluids.

Hypokalemic alkalosis occurs when your body lacks the normal amount of the mineral potassium. You normally get potassium from your food, but potassium deficiency is rarely caused by not eating enough of it. Kidney disease, excessive sweating, and diarrhea are just a few ways you can lose too much potassium. Potassium is essential to the proper functioning of the:

  • heart
  • kidneys
  • muscles
  • nervous system
  • digestive system

Symptoms of alkalosis can vary. In the early stages of the condition, you may have:

  • nausea
  • numbness
  • prolonged muscle spasms
  • muscle twitching
  • hand tremor

If it isn’t treated right away, severe symptoms can develop. These symptoms could lead to shock or coma. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • dizziness
  • difficulty breathing
  • confusion
  • stupor
  • coma

The symptoms of alkalosis mimic symptoms of other conditions. It’s very important that you don’t attempt to diagnose yourself. Make an appointment with your doctor to get evaluated.

Your doctor will ask you about your medical history and the symptoms you’ve been having. They will likely order tests that will rule out other conditions. Common tests include:

  • urinalysis
  • urine pH
  • basic metabolic panel
  • arterial blood gas analysis

According to the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, normal blood pH levels are between 7.35 and 7.45. A blood pH above 7.45 may indicate alkalosis.

Your doctor may also want to measure the carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in your blood to rule out respiratory issues.

Your treatment plan will depend on the cause of your alkalosis. Your carbon dioxide level needs to return to normal if you have respiratory alkalosis. If you have rapid breathing caused by anxiety, taking slow, deep breaths can often improve symptoms and regulate your oxygen level. If tests reveal that you have a low oxygen level, you’ll need to receive oxygen through a mask.

If your rapid breathing is caused by pain, then treating the pain will help bring your respiratory rate to normal and improve your symptoms.

If your alkalosis is caused by a loss of chemicals such as chloride or potassium, you’ll be prescribed medications or supplements to replace these chemicals.

Some cases of alkalosis result from an electrolyte imbalance, which may be corrected by drinking plenty of fluids or drinks that contain electrolytes. If you have an advanced case of electrolyte imbalance, it will need to be treated in the hospital.

Most people recover from alkalosis once they get treatment.

Reduce your risk for developing alkalosis by maintaining good health, eating a healthy diet, and staying hydrated. Choosing foods high in nutrients and potassium can help combat electrolyte deficiencies. Nutrients and potassium are primarily found in fruits and vegetables, such as:

  • carrots
  • bananas
  • milk
  • beans
  • spinach
  • bran

Steps you can take to prevent dehydration include:

  • drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day
  • drinking water before, during, and after exercise
  • using electrolyte-replacement drinks for high-intensity exercises
  • avoiding sodas or juices, which have a high sugar content and can make dehydration worse
  • limiting caffeine, which is found in soda, tea, and coffee

It’s important to remember that you’re already dehydrated if you feel thirsty.

Dehydration can also occur rapidly if you lose a lot of electrolytes. This can happen when you’re vomiting from the flu. If you cannot keep potassium-rich foods in your stomach, make sure you still drink adequate fluids, such as water, sports drinks, and broth-based soups.

The outlook for alkalosis largely depends on how soon it’s diagnosed. The sooner your condition is treated, the better the outcome is for that condition. Alkalosis caused by existing kidney conditions may not be preventable. It’s also important to follow all of your doctor’s care instructions once you get a diagnosis.

Juicing to Relieve Headaches or Migraines

Juicing to Relieve Headaches or Migraines

MIGRAINE RELIEVER JUICE RECIPE RICH IN MAGNESIUM, CALCIUM AND POTASSIUM

If you’re experiencing chronic migraines it could be due to what you’re eating. Some of the foods that trigger migraines:  Fried foods, sugar, artificial sweeteners, flour based products, dairy products, alcohol, caffeine, food additives, chocolate and some nuts or seeds.

A diet high in complex carbohydrates (whole grains and starchy vegetables) and low in protein is recommended for headache sufferers.

Most of the time, a migraine is the body’s way of signalling that it is dehydrated. Drink plenty of water, fresh fruit and vegetable juices to rid the body of the toxins that are the main culprit of headaches.

Most fruits and vegetables are rich in three very important minerals that help remedy migraines, namely: Potassium, calcium and magnesium. Some foods that especially help: Dark green vegetables, bananas, cantaloupe, celery, cucumber, lemon, pineapple, watermelon, and ginger.

1/2 pineapple
3-4 leaves kale or a bunch of spinach
1 stick of celery
1/2 cucumber
1/4 lemon
1/2 inch ginger root (optional)

And drink plenty of [eafl id=1053 name=”Perfect Water Purifier – articleLink2″ text=”filtered water”]!

Coconut Milk Smoothie For Weight Loss

Coconut Milk Smoothie For Weight Loss

Coconut milk, despite its high saturated fat content, can help the body burn more energy and lose weight more easily. The unique structure of the MCFAs (medium chain fatty acids) found in coconut milk allow them to be burned more readily for energy, and increases total energy expenditure over the day. Additionally, MCFAs have been shown to be more satiating than longer-chain fats, filling you up better and helping prevent hunger.

Ingredients:

8 oz. organic coconut milk, (I like the Native Forest brand, the container is BPA free)
1 tablespoon organic extra virgin coconut oil (I like the Nutiva brand)
2 eggs, organic, free range, and yes, raw!
1/4 cup organic frozen raspberries or other frozen berry
1 frozen organic banana
Optional: 1 tsp- 1 tbsp organic raw honey ( I leave this out but you might prefer it!)

Directions:

In a high powered blender or Vitamix, blend well until desired consistency is achieved. ENJOY!

17 Easy Health Hacks That you Can Incorporate into Your Day

17 Easy Health Hacks That you Can Incorporate into Your Day

Many people put a lot of undue pressure on themselves by thinking that they need to make big changes for better health.  The opposite is true – because lasting change comes from making many smaller changes that are easy and barely noticeable. Here are 17 simple health hacks that can help you to become instantly healthier:

  1. When you work out, turn the music down. Listen to it at about 60% of the maximum volume because studies show that consistently exposing yourself to sounds over 100 decibels can permanently affect your hearing.
  1. Take a baby aspirin daily. One baby aspirin (81 mg) taken daily for ten years can reduce your risk of stomach cancer by 30%, from colon cancer by 35% and esophageal cancer by 30%.
  1. Take probiotics every day. Choose foods like yogurts that contain lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium animalis lactis BB12 or take supplements.  They help with digestion, and they also boost your immunity.
  1. Take your time in the bathroom. If you do not eliminate poop promptly (when it is ready), it can dry and become harder, plugging up your system and causing constipation.
  1. Add some coconut oil to your coffee. One tablespoon of coconut oil can stabilize your blood sugar levels for the day which means you will experience fewer highs and lows.
  1. Use a disinfectant wipe to clean your office doorknob if the last person that touched it was sick. A virus can spread to around 60% of workers through an office in just two hours.  To avoid getting sick, use disinfectant wipes.
  1. Answer your co-worker’s email in person. It is a much friendlier option, and it forces you to get up and walk around.  You should move around at least every hour if you work at a desk because sitting for long periods of time can lead to poor heart health and weight gain.
  1. Drink more coffee. Women who drink less than 150 mg of coffee a day are up to 15% more likely to develop tinnitus than those who drink 450 mg.
  1. Drop down and do ten push-ups, ten squats, and ten bench dips. Just take a quick break of thirty seconds in your day to get up and move around.
  1. Top your salad with salmon. When you eat omega 3 rich fatty fish twice a week, it lowers your risk of hearing loss by 20% and strengthens the cardiovascular system.
  1. Let that post-lunch yawn out. It is said that a good yawn can help to cool your brain that will improve your performance and level of alertness.
  1. Smile at a coworker, especially if you are mad at them. Smiling can help to lower your heart rate if you are stressed out.
  1. Sit up straight in your chair. It is better for your neck and back and can be a mood booster.  When you move to proper posture, it increases your dopamine and serotonin levels while decreasing cortisol – the human stress hormone.
  1. Stand up and hop ten times. A group of women in the age range of 25 and 50 who jumped at least ten times each day increased their hip bone mineral density after just 16 weeks.
  1. Massage your face. A 30-second self-massage can get rid of a tension headache.  Just find where the tender spots are on your forehead or scalp and use your thumb and knuckles in a circular motion to rub them.
  1. Visit a funny website for a quick laugh. Laughing is an effective method of lowering your blood pressure.
  1. Do some yoga. Yoga can help to boost blood flow to your brain and stretch out your spine.

Just a few small changes over time can add up to significant changes over time that are noticeable.  The result is that you will be feeling better and have better health.  Try to incorporate a new healthy habit each day and see where it gets you in a year’s time.

9 Tips for Shopping at the Farmers’ Market

9 Tips for Shopping at the Farmers’ Market

Any given day of the week in California, you are bound to find a farmers market within a reasonable driving distance. There, you can purchase a bounty of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and cheese, learn secrets to picking the best watermelons, and make a connection with the people who get their hands dirty and grow our food.

Personally, I come from a long line of farmers and ranchers, so it’s no great secret that I love to support local farmers who make a living off of growing and harvesting their own crops and animals. It takes an extreme amount of hard work and dedication to turn even the smallest plot of land into a working farm and turn a profit. Once you start chatting with the retailers at your local farmers market, you too will see the pride and love that they have for each item on their table. And who wouldn’t want to buy fresh ingredients from someone who puts their heart and soul into their work, rather than the mass producers that seemingly only care about their bottom line? Many people avoid farmers markets simply because they don’t know what to expect, so enjoy the freshest flavors with these 9 tips to help you at your next Farmers Market trip.

  • Learn What Time To Shop

To get the freshest ingredients, the best time to visit the farmers market is early in the morning. If you don’t get there early-ish, be prepared to rummage through a few piles of kale to find the perfect bunch. This is especially true if chefs are purchasing inventory for their restaurants. That said, if you get there later, especially near the end of the farmers market, you will be more likely to get great deals on produce that is still farm fresh and delicious.

  • BYOB- Bring Your Own Bags

While some stands do offer bags for their customers, bringing your own reusable bags, coolers, or a cart, depending on how much you intend to purchase, is ideal. The cost of bags greatly cuts into a farmers small price margins and they greatly appreciate the gesture. I believe that small, simple gesture is a great way to help build a relationship with the person who grows your food, thusly giving you better treatment. People want to take care of those who take care of them.

  • Small Bills Are a Must

Especially if you are arriving early, bring small bills. Most farmers markets only accept cash as a form of payment, so if you don’t have exact change, small bills are a great way to get as close as you can to the cost of your purchase. This also helps the farmer out by providing him or her with change to use for customers later on.

  • Ask Questions

Perhaps the greatest thing about visiting the farmers market is that you can look the grower of your food in the eye and discuss exactly how your food was grown, where it came from, how to properly prepare it, and feel confident that you know exactly what you are putting into your body. Normally, the story of their farm and how they grow their food is enough to keep you coming back every week.

  • Specifically, Ask Why It’s Not Certified Organic

USDA certifications are not cheap. Many farms that sell food at the farmers market are very small operations that cannot afford that expensive USDA certification that says they are organic, even if their products aren’t treated with pesticides or antibiotics, and are organically grown. It pays off to ask your farmer why they aren’t certified, and gives you an opportunity to support a small local business. If it’s not organic, you are voicing that you do care how your food is grown.

  • Don’t Ignore Foods You Aren’t Familiar With

If there is a food you don’t recognize, chances are the farmer will be more than happy to tell you all about it. Remember, they are trying to build a business, so if they have a unique product, they will jump on the opportunity to make you aware of how that product is unique. Don’t be afraid to ask the farmer what it tastes like, how to prepare it, and the health benefits of consuming that food.

  • Go For the Ugly Duckling

We have been conditioned to reach for the perfectly round tomatoes, the shiny apples and the spotless bunch of kale. But don’t let a little dirt or misshapen edges scare you away. In fact, not only will the ugly’s be less expensive, they also taste the best. But don’t take my word for it, judge it for yourself!

  • Is it Really Healthy?

Just because you are at a farmers market, doesn’t mean that everything sold there is healthy. Of course that’s not to say that you can’t enjoy these things in moderation, but gluten free corn dogs are still corn dogs. When in doubt, just reach for the organic peaches.

  • Don’t be Afraid To Haggle

Just like everyone else, farmers are trying to make a living. That said, especially near the end of the day, they would rather make some money than no money on the produce that will be wasted if it doesn’t sell. As consumers, we are always looking for the best deal- so if you are confident enough to ask if they will take a lesser rate, especially near the end of the day, chances are, they will.

Avoid exposure to aluminum, fluoride, and glyphosate

Avoid exposure to aluminum, fluoride, and glyphosate

The following list offers a number of suggestions for items to avoid, to reduce your exposure to aluminum, fluoride, glyphosate, and other brain-harming components:

  1. Processed foods and sodas. This will help you avoid both GE ingredients (which tend to be contaminated with glyphosate) and aluminum. In addition, replacing processed foods with whole organic foods will drastically reduce your sugar/fructose intake, which will help normalize your insulin and leptin sensitivity. This is in fact one of the best strategies for protecting and preserving your brain function and overall health. Fructose and gluten are other dietary factors that promote Alzheimer’s, and are best avoided as much as possible.
  2. Mechanically deboned chicken, which tends to be high in fluoride as a result of the processing.
  3. Dental amalgams. Dental amalgam fillings, which are 50 percent mercury by weight, are one of the major sources of heavy metal toxicity. However, you should be healthy prior to having them removed. Once you have adjusted to following the diet described in my optimized nutrition plan, you can follow the mercury detox protocol and then find a biological dentist to have your amalgams removed.
  4. Cosmetics and personal care products containing aluminum, such as antiperspirants (including salt crystals, made of alum), lotions, sunscreens, and shampoos.
  5. Vaccines containing either mercury (thimerosal) and/or aluminum.
  6. Aluminum-containing drugs, such as antacids, analgesics, anti-diarrheals, and others
  7. Anticholinergics and statin drugs. Drugs that block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter, have been shown to increase your risk of dementia. These drugs include certain nighttime pain relievers, antihistamines, sleep aids, certain antidepressants, medications to control incontinence, and certain narcotic pain relievers.
  8. Statin drugs are particularly problematic because they suppress the synthesis of cholesterol, deplete your brain of coenzyme Q10 and neurotransmitter precursors, and prevent adequate delivery of essential fatty acids and fat-soluble antioxidants to your brain by inhibiting the production of the indispensable carrier biomolecule known as low-density lipoprotein.
  9. Fluorinated medications, including Cipro.
  10. Fluoridated water – Perfect Water Purifier
  11. Fluoridated toothpaste and fluoride gel treatments.
  12. Non-stick cookware will outgas fluoride, but also avoid other aluminum-containing products, such as cans, foil, juice pouches, tins, and water bottles.
The Trick To Absorbing More Veggie Nutrients

The Trick To Absorbing More Veggie Nutrients

How you can absorb 2 to 3 times the nutrients in your vegetables just by timing when you eat them!

It’s so tough to try and get all of the right servings of vegetables. Heck, even if they are veggies and greens that we love and adore, it’s hard to make the time! How do we make time to sit down and chew all of the veggies that we are “supposed” to get it each day?

Well first, If you don’t own a Vitamix or another high powered blender which can puree veggies, you may want to look into it. It’s as close as you’re going to get to an IV drip of pure nutrients which haven’t been stripped out through the process of juicing. But that’s really not the health hack I wanted to point out, I’m more interested in telling you how you can time your veggie consumption in a way which will enable you to absorb a LOT more nutrients.

green workout smoothie

It all has to do with when you workout, or even go for a walk. Yep, it’s that simple. You see, when you go for a walk or do any kind of activity, your body becomes more sensitive to what you absorb. It’s because of something called insulin sensitivity and it can work for you or against you! What this insulin sensitivity does is make your body more receptive to nutrients that are injested into the body at that specific point in time.

Simply put, this means that consolidating your green smoothie or greens consumption to the 20-30 minute time period immediately following activity means that you’re body is going to absorb much more of the essential nutrients! After exercise is the perfect time to whip up something in the Vitamix and get a powerful infusion of greens that your body will actually use, and not waste.

Give it a whirl (or a blend) and let me know if you notice a difference in your overall energy! I really do want to hear your feedback and hear about your success!

Why the Flu Shot can be More Dangerous than the Flu

Why the Flu Shot can be More Dangerous than the Flu

Have you ever noticed that when flu season arrives there are endless ads promoting the need for you to have a flu shot?  The promotion of the flu shot is a business that is well-marketed and driven by money.  Do you get a flu shot every year?

Did you know that there are many much more efficient ways for you to prevent the flu?  You can support your immune system with many different natural foods and herbs that have antiviral properties including ginger, oregano oil, and garlic.  It is possible to bolster your immune system naturally during the time when flu season is in full swing so why would you put yourself in the path of potential health danger?

There are plenty of potentially deadly side effects that can come with a flu shot that are similar to flu symptoms, so it seems strange that you would expose yourself to this risk.  There is also a risk of dementia and brain damage.  It is much more important to protect your family and yourself from the flu shot because of the dangers that can put your health at risk.

Here are the main reasons for this thinking:

  1. The World Health Organization reported in February 2010 that 12 countries had documented a possible link between people developing narcolepsy and the H1N1 vaccine. Finland was one country that admitted that the swine flu vaccine causes this disorder.
  1. In 2012, a study was completed at the University of Minnesota that showed that the flu shot has an effectiveness rate of 1.5%. For every 100 people who have been vaccinated, only 1.5 of them will be protected from getting the flu.
  1. High levels of mercury have been found in the vaccine that is made by GlaxoSmithKline. Mercury toxicity handles digestive imbalances, respiratory problems, ADD, oral health issues, depression, memory loss and cardiovascular diseases. The mercury levels in the Flulaval vaccine was as much as 51 parts per million.  This level of mercury is 100 times higher than the highest level of mercury that is found in contaminated fish.  These vaccines are injected into the body, and this makes them much more toxic than any toxins that a person ingests orally.
  1. Flu shots can cause Alzheimer’s disease. Hugh Fudenberg is a well-known immunogeneticist who has said that for people who receive a flu shot every year for 3 to 5 years have ten times the chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease.  (As compared to those who haven’t had a flu shot).  As you age, your immune system weakens, and this can help to lower your ability to fight off infection.  When the flu virus is introduced into an elderly person’s system, it may have deadly consequences.
  1. Vaccinated children often develop running noses, ear infections, bronchiolitis or pneumonia after being vaccinated. The flu virus that has been introduced into their bodies can create these symptoms and can lead to an immunosuppression reaction or lowering of the natural immunity.  The flu vaccine can sensitize the body against the flu virus.  The Finnish government admitted that there was a proven link and stated that they would pay for medical care for the lifetime of 79 children who have been damaged by the swine flu vaccine.  76 of the 79 children suffered from hallucinations and paralyzing physical collapses.
  1. In Australia, the practice of administering flu vaccines to children was banned nearly four years ago due to the blatant risk of side effects that include dangerous high fevers, vomiting, and convulsions.
  1. The Center for Disease Control has a 15 member Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) which is tasked with the decision on who should be vaccinated in any given year. Most of the ACIP have a financial interest in promoting immunizations.

Before you decide to get that flu shot, inform yourself of all of the side effects, issues, and other health risks.  Take the time to decide on the best course of action for yourself and your family by informing yourself fully before agreeing to have a flu shot.
