The Benefits of Drinking Plain Water

The Benefits of Drinking Plain Water

tap waterWater, water, every where, nor any drop to drink.” Unlike Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Ancient Mariner, who was surrounded by undrinkable salt water, most Americans have an unlimited supply of clean water to quench our thirsts.

Yet many of us turn a blind eye to it and instead reach for other beverages throughout the day, like sodas, juices, coffee, and tea, despite warnings from health experts over recent years about the added calories in sweetened beverages and the health benefits of plain water.

Now a recent study in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics provides even more evidence that we should choose water over other drinks if we want to control our weight. For the study, researchers from the University of Illinois looked at data on the eating (and drinking) habits of 18,311 adults as recorded in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005 and 2012.

Survey participants were asked to recall their dietary intake over two separate days. They reported their consumption of plain water (which included tap water, water from fountains and water coolers, and bottled water) as well as their consumption of other beverages like soda, fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, and sweetened bottled waters. Participants were also questioned about their intake of “energy-dense, nutrient-poor” foods, like cookies, ice cream, chips, and pastries.

On average, participants drank 4.2 cups of plain water a day and took in 2,157 calories. About 125 of those calories came from sweetened beverages, and about 432 calories came from energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods.

The researchers found that the participants who drank the most plain water in their daily diet consumed fewer total calories, drank fewer sweetened beverages, and took in less total fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt, and cholesterol. In fact, they discovered that increasing plain water consumption by one to three cups a day could decrease calorie intake by 68 to 205 calories a day. That could add up to a lot fewer calories over time — and result in significant weight loss.

These results support prior research on this topic, which has shown that drinking water before meals and that substituting water for sweetened beverages can cut down on calorie intake and improve weight control. That means people interested in losing weight and improving their overall health could benefit from incorporating more plain water into their daily diet.

So next time you’re thirsty, instead of ignoring your kitchen sink at home or the bubbler at work, take a moment to savor the one drink that’s free, refreshing, and actually good for us: plain old water.

Keep Lemon Slices in the freezer for immediate Lemon Water

Kitchen Hacks – I’ll be publishing a series of tips & tricks in the kitchen. Some may be super basic and you may know them already but maybe you’ll find something that will make your life a little easier!

I’ve often had problems with lemons going bad because I didn’t use them all up in time. But not anymore!

Did you know that you can keep Lemon Slices in the freezer for immediate Lemon Water? It’s so easy and you won’t have any excuses not to drink Lemon Water! Lemon Water is super healthy for you and you should drink lemon water every morning 🙂 Plus the frozen lemon slices also cool down your water a bit (which is great for the summer!). You can use them for cocktails too!

Use organic produce! You don’t want lemon peel with pesticides swimming in your [eafl id=1053 name=”Perfect Water Purifier – articleLink2″ text=”purified water”].frozen-lemon-slices-water-1

Make Jumbo Sized Lemon Ice Cubes

This is a fabulous idea for a water or sangria pitcher! A muffin pan gives you much larger cubes, making the ice last much longer. This also looks beautiful with the whole lemon slices in there. You could also do this with oranges; maybe even throw in some mint or sliced strawberries!

Pure Lemon Juice Ice Cubes

I filled an ice tray with straight lemon juice and set it in the freezer. Now rather than adding lemon slices to a pitcher of water I can drop a lemon cube into a large glass of [eafl id=1053 name=”Perfect Water Purifier – articleLink2″ text=”filtered water”].

Coconut Water Lemonade

Coconut Water Lemonade

In the past few years, I’ve been so happy to see that coconut water has become a mainstream drink in the United States. Everything tastes so much better with coconut water, including this lemonade, an all-American favorite. Trust me on this, once you try my coconut water lemonade, you will never, EVER go back to regular lemonade.

You can get canned coconut water easily from any store now. I used some fresh and homegrown lemons and calamansi limes (or calamondin), given to me by my friend, and mixed it with the coconut water. All you need is a little bit of sugar and ice, and you will have the most amazing lemonade; everyone will be begging you for more!

Coconut Water Lemonade – amazing and refreshing lemonade made with coconut water and fresh lemon juice. The best lemonade recipe ever!

Total Time: 10 Minutes

4 cups canned coconut water
5 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 calamansi lime, extract the juice, optional
3 tablespoons sugar or agave nectar
2 lemons, sliced
2 cups ice
Mint leaves, for garnishing

In a pitcher, combine the coconut water, lemon juice, calamansi lime juice and sugar together. Stir to mix well. Add the sliced lemons and ice into the pitcher. Pour the lemonade into glasses and garnish with mint leaves.

Slice the lemon into pieces, set aside.

I used Kimbo Young Coconut Juice with pulp and strained out the pulp.

You may skip the calamansi lime if you don’t have it. They are the fruits from the calamondin tree. They are available in Southeast Asian stores or Filipino food stores.

The All Natural Heartburn Relief Recipe

Do you stash bottles of antacids in your car, office and home? Or do you experience less frequent but still very uncomfortable bouts of heartburn? Then your body is telling you something… and the message is NOT to take a swig of liquid antacid medication or pop some pills.

Both acid blockers and antacids, the common treatments for heartburn, actually perpetuate a vicious cycle of attack on your poor esophageal lining. That’s because heartburn results from too little stomach acid, not too much. Counterintuitive, right? But it’s biology, folks.

Stress and poor diet reduce gastric juices instead of increasing gastric juice. That is one reason why we see skyrocketing numbers of heartburn sufferers in our stressed and unhealthy world. This low stomach acid not only leads to heartburn but also bloating, hormone problems, peeling nails, thinning hair, gas, constipation and more.

Acid reducers and acid blockers further lower our stomach acid. This reduces the sensation of heartburn by making the stomach contents more alkaline, but it doesn’t prevent the stomach contents from leaking into the esophagus. And the more alkaline the food in the stomach, the less it gets digested and the more problems it causes when it goes lower down into the digestive tract.

When our stomach is producing adequate acid, then the valve at the top of the stomach is signaled to close tightly, preventing the acidic contents from leaking into the esophagus. This heartburn remedy helps signal the stomach to close this valve.

This effective and natural heartburn remedy works the opposite way of Tums or Gaviscon or [insert heartburn medication of your choice here]. It makes the stomach more acid, not less acid. This signals the valve at the top of the stomach to close and the valve at the bottom of the stomach to open – so food goes down, not up!

2 tsp. raw apple cider vinegar, such as [eafl id=1293 name=”Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar – Article Link” text=”Bragg’s”]
1/4 – 1/2 cup filtered water (I recommend [eafl id=1053 name=”Perfect Water Purifier – articleLink2″ text=”this Water Purifier”], which eliminates toxic fluoride and chlorine)

acv-heartburn-recipe

Mix together and drink at the first sign of heartburn. You can continue to take this every 5-10 minutes until you have relief, but one serving usually takes action within just three minutes. If it tastes too sour for you, add a teaspoon of RAW (also called unpasteurized) honey or reduce the vinegar to 1 tsp. Otherwise, just gulp it down.

For best results, take this with every meal and between every meal to help prevent heartburn.

Fruit Infused Water is a Delicious Holiday Tradition!

Fruit Infused Water is a Delicious Holiday Tradition!

I love fruit infused water. It makes it so much easier to drink water throughout the day. One of the best tricks to drink more water is to keep a few different flavors of water in the fridge. If you don’t feel like a glass of citrus water then maybe strawberry and blueberry water will hit the spot. If you’re in more of a herb mood then maybe watermelon and rosemary. Spa water isn’t just for the spa anymore! 🙂

I love water, but I do get kind of bored with it. My water boredom motivated me to start keeping a variety of infused waters in the fridge. Water with subtle flavors infused into it. Water with a little something extra. A touch of flavor–not an explosion of flavor–with little or no sweetness. Many spas serve fancy waters like these, and it turns out that they couldn’t be simpler to make. And, they are so refreshing.

How to make Fruit Infused Water

What you’ll need:

  • fruit — I like to use all kinds of citrus and berries. I also found pineapple and watermelon to work well for flavoring water. Make sure it’s good and ripe for maximum sweetness and flavor. If you don’t want to buy whole fruit, many grocery stores sell pre-cut fruit.
  • herbs — many herbs complement fruit flavors well.
  • jars or pitchers — I use 2 quart mason jars primarily, but any 2 quart pitcher will do.
fruit infusion pitcher–I have a couple of these–it’s another option if you think you’ll be making infused waters regularly; a very easy, tidy way to strain the fruit from the water.
fruit infusion water bottle–I love using this for a portable, on-the-go option.
  • muddler or wooden spoon for mashing fruit and herbs
  • filtered water — Don’t use dirty tap water. Filtered water makes all the difference in the world.

Fresh vs. frozen fruit. When in season, I prefer to use fresh fruit. However, when fruit is out of season, the fresh version can be tart or flavorless. Because fruit that is to be frozen is picked at the peak of ripeness, it is often the better option for the best flavor, sweetness, and nutrients. I find this to especially to be the case with berries and peaches.

A variety of fresh herbs. Use whatever herbs you like or happen to have on hand. It’s surprising how well herbs blend with most fruit flavors. Mint is the most obvious herb choice. I have also used basil, rosemary, sage, thyme, lavender, and tarragon. All of which are delicious and complement the fruit well.

Quantities: The quantities in my flavored water recipes are all for 2 quart jars or pitchers.

Make sure you thoroughly wash your fruit. Citrus fruits and berries need to be really, really clean to keep contaminants and bacteria out of your flavored water. I recommend organic fruit, if it isn’t going to be peeled.

Watermelon Rosemary Flavored Water. Add a sprig of rosemary to a pitcher and muddle gently (rosemary releases a strong flavor without much muddling). Add watermelon cubes; twist and press gently to release juices. Fill pitcher with ice cubes, add filtered water to the top, stir, cover and refrigerate.

Cranberry and Lime Flavored Water (beautiful color and mildly tart) — Quarter 2 limes; with your hands, squeeze the juice into the jar, then throw in the squeezed lime quarters. Add 1 cup of cranberries. Press and twist with a muddler to release some of the juices (don’t pulverize the fruit). Fill the jar with ice, then add filtered water to the top. Stir, cover, and refrigerate. If the water is too tart add a little bit of agave or stevia to sweeten the water a little.

How to Soak Nuts and Make Cashew Milk or Cashew Cream

How to Soak Nuts and Make Cashew Milk or Cashew Cream

cashew milk vitamix recipe
Making home made nut milk or nut cream is delicious and it’s so much easier than you might think. Especially if you have a Vitamix blender. This recipe and how-to is focused on making cashew cream or cashew milk but the method is nearly identical for a variety of different nuts. I do believe in soaking my nuts in purified water before turning them into cream or milk. The timeline for nut soaking times is below.

Which Nuts are Best to turn into Milk?

I have made nut milks from almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts and pistachios, but from what I understand the similar methodologies apply no matter which nut you decide to use. Macadamia nut milk in particular is amazing, so rich and full of incredible flavor, but it  has got to be the most expensive nut milk you can make. I only make it as a special treat during the holidays.

How & Why to Soak Nuts for Milking.

Most nuts, seeds, grains and beans are covered in natural chemicals – enzyme inhibitors and toxins – that protect them while growing. These nutritional inhibitors and toxic substances are enzyme inhibitors, phytates (phytic acid), polyphenols (tannins), and goitrogens. Once harvested, those same chemicals, the major one being phytic acid – are indigestible to the human body and must be broken down before consumption. When food containing phytic acid is consumed, the acid combines with important minerals like calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and especially zinc in the intestinal tract and blocks their absorption which inhibits our digestive systems’ ability to break the nut down properly.

The very simple process of soaking releases these chemicals, helping you to absorb your food’s essential minerals and nutrients.

Soaking nuts in filtered water makes them easier to digest and improves their flavor.

nut soaking chart

makes 1 quart
* I find that 1 cup of nuts is more than enough for 1 quart of milk, some people prefer 2 cups.

1) Soak your raw cashews and vanilla bean in filtered water for at least 2 hours.

2) Discard soaking water and rinse your cashews and the vanilla bean.

3) Place soaked cashews, honey (or other sweetener), vanilla bean, a dash of sea salt and 4 cups of water in a blender. Cover and blend on high for 1-2 minutes. It will be milky and have a bit of foam on the top.

4) If you’re using a Vitamix blender it will blend the cashews smooth. If you’re not using a Vitamix then strain milk through a nut bag, doubled up cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.

NOTES:

Some people prefer not to strain their cashew milk, since it technically doesn’t have to be, (think about all those glorious creamy cashew cream sauces). Even though it has far less pulp than other nuts.

These same instructions work for any nut you may choose to use. Though, generally almonds & cashews are my favorites.

Store in a covered glass jar, bottle or pitcher in the refrigerator, it’ll be good for about 4-5 days.

Separation is totally natural with homemade nut milks, just be sure to shake it up just before serving.

Here’s EXACTLY What Your Drinking Water Is Doing To Your Body (Stop Drinking THIS)

Here’s EXACTLY What Your Drinking Water Is Doing To Your Body (Stop Drinking THIS)

Brita and Pur Filter Users Are Outraged
Most people who use a Brita or Pur Filter think their water is safe to drink.

The reality is it’s not.

All the Brita does is “reduce” Chlorine. The Pur helps reduce a few more chemicals. But their main purpose isn’t to eliminate toxins and chemicals. They’re just meant to make your water smell and taste better.

Yet few people realize how much nasty and dangerous stuff is in their water.

In fact the EPA openly admits there are toxic chemicals dribbling out of your tap. And those filters don’t remove them from your water. Things like bacteria, Chromium 6, Arsenic, prescription drugs, xenoestrogens, and perhaps worst of all…Fluoride.

Fluoride was originally put into our water to help fight against tooth decay.

Yet Dr. John Colquhoun, the dentist who first brought Fluoride to American drinking water, has now claimed it does not help prevent tooth decay. In fact, he now believes it’s toxic to the human body and should be removed from our water supply completely.

A study from Tucson, Arizona which followed 26,000 school children, revealed that the more fluoride a child drank, the more cavities appeared in their teeth.

And that’s not the worst part. Clinical studies have found that fluoride can actually weaken your bones and increase hip fractures.

Harvard research shows that high fluoride levels can lower IQ…

Unfortunately drinking bottled water doesn’t solve the problem either.

Did you know that up to 40% of bottled water is just tap water? That’s right. Many bottled water companies simply bottle up your tap water and sell it back to you for massive profits.

Business Insider did research that showed the average price for bottled water purchases is $7.50 a gallon. That’s double or triple the price of gasoline depending on where you live!

And it’s about $1.22 a gallon if you buy it in bulk.

If you drink the water from your refrigerator that won’t solve the problem either. The water from your fridge is actually the same exact water that comes out of your sink! Even if your fridge has a filter it’s no better than the Brita or Pur.

The reality is you need to take action into your own hands and filter your water to guarantee your not contaminating your body with cancer causing toxins.

Your Brita or Pur won’t do the trick. So what’s the solution?

Fortunately companies like General Electric and [eafl id=1053 name=”Perfect Water Purifier – articleLink2″ text=”Perfect Water”] have figured out how to filter our water. The [eafl id=1053 name=”Perfect Water Purifier – articleLink2″ text=”Perfect Water filter”] automatically pulls out fluoride, heavy metals, and prescription drugs from your water in just seconds.

Fat Burning Morning Drink

Fat Burning Morning Drink

When we awaken in the morning, we are ending a period of fasting that has lasted all night long.  The first thing that you consume in the morning is very important and can have a critical impact on our health.  Easy absorption on an empty stomach is the main reason.

A simple glass of warm filtered water containing cayenne pepper, lemon and apple cider vinegar can have a significant impact on your health.  The benefits of this simple drink are extensive and nothing short of amazing.  Want to know more about the benefits that you will see from consuming this beverage first thing every morning? Here they are:

The lemon helps to break up mucus, helping to clear your sinuses that can be a significant benefit for allergy sufferers or those who have a cold or flu.

  • Restoration of the alkaline acid balance in your body which will relieve any issues that you are suffering due your consumption of a diet that is high in acid-producing foods.
  • This beverage will help to remove toxins from the body.
  • Clears up the skin and gives it a noticeably healthy glow.
  • Can help to break down fats in the body which will result in noticeable weight loss.
  • This beverage will lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
  • Feeds the liver and detoxifies it at the same time.
  • Strengthens the immune system so you do not get sick as often.
  • Gives your body a lighter feeling.
  • Boosts up the metabolism and gives you more energy to get on with your day.
  • Purifies the colon which makes it much easier to improve the digestive process and allow your body to absorb nutrients more easily. Colon purification helps to clear up the skin and improve its appearance.
  • Can effectively lower high blood pressure.
  • Helps your digestive system and allows you to eliminate waste more regularly and efficiently.
  • Pushes your lymph system into balance that can assist with the various daily functions of the body. It can also help to fight infection and to balance the body fluids.

Here is the recipe for this amazing fat burning morning drink:

Use 12 ounces of warm filtered water (not HOT water).  Hot water will break down many of the essential properties of the majority of these ingredients including enzymes, minerals and vitamins.

Add juice from a half of a lemon

Add in 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

Add a dash of cayenne pepper to the beverage

Directions:

  • Always drink this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach when you first wake up.
  • Stir all of the ingredients together and drink the beverage immediately.
  • It is a good idea to drink this concoction through a straw so that you do not get all of the acids on your teeth that can cause damage, especially if you are drinking this every day.
  • Don’t eat anything else for 10 – 15 minutes so that you allow your body a chance to absorb all of the ingredients.

When you first begin drinking this mixture you may find it very tart and difficult to consume.  If necessary, add in a teaspoon of honey that will add a little bit of sweetness.  As you start to get used to the taste you can start to reduce the honey until you no longer need to add the honey.  This drink has a lot of major health benefits, and your body is going to appreciate it.  You may not like it at first, but once you make it a habit of drinking this daily, you are well on your way to enjoying the health benefits that this elixir provides.
