When I was 275lbs and struggling with my weight, the last thing that I thought about was inflammation causing my problems… I had always resorted to the basics… simple calories in vs. calories out to lose weight, BUT that was NOT the case here. There was something bigger at play because I was literally doing everything that I was ‘supposed’ to do.

Meanwhile, my wife was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease that effected her thyroid (hashimoto’s) and later, Lyme disease. It was the serendipitous timing of this that made me realize that inflammation might be playing a larger role then I had thought. I’m sure many of you have heard of these diseases, and the scary thing is that they can be affecting you and you might not even know it!

To make a very long story short, I began learning about inflammation, using my resources within the healthcare industry to dive into some heavy research on how inflammation works and how it could be holding my wife and I (and others) from living the lives that we wanted to live. Like so many others, it’s easy to not even realize you’re being held back.

I found that inflammation can cause all kinds of issues in the digestive tract making it so that you’re not absorbing nutrients. This was a HUGE step, because I WAS eating healthy, but I couldn’t lose weight at all! So when I realized that there were specific “health foods” that I was eating that were causing this to happen, it all made sense….

If you’re not absorbing nutrients, then you body goes into starvation mode and that means that you will store fat! It’s a simple survival mechanism! This was the code that needed to be cracked! I needed to find a way to reduce the activity of the COX-1 enzyme and the production of prostaglandins (a fancy way of saying ‘how inflammation is caused”)

But the difficulty was finding a way to rid my body of the inflammation so that I could begin absorbing nutrients again. And back then, this was a long drawn out process, simply because the science wasn’t really there at the time. Most of us don’t really have the time or the energy to devote to experimenting with different foods to find what works for them.

Well, I did reduce my inflammation, and I was able to get back on track and ultimately become on author on this very topic, but it took a lot of time.

So over the past six months, using my experiences and my research I have developed a way to reduce inflammation within the body and to help the body absorb nutrients again, all with a WHOLE FOODS approach. As someone that has been in the healthcare industry before, I wanted to make sure this was a down-to-earth way to reduce inflammation.

Anyhow, it has been awesome to see how many people have been having success and not just reducing inflammation, but truly losing weight and kick starting their new lives feeling utterly amazing!

I know, I know… some ingredients like beets, grapefruit and kale can sometimes overwhelm our taste buds. So… how about if I told you to only use a 1/4 of a beet and 1/2 a grapefruit?! And I’m going to do you one better. I’m going to add sweet carrots, an orange and some ginger to make a wonderfully tasting detox juice recipe which also helps with inflammation!

Here’s my super simple Beet & Grapefruit Juice Recipe.

Ingredients:

1/2 fresh grapefruit, peeled
1 orange, peeled
2 carrots
1/4 beet
1/2 inch of ginger

Blend all of the ingredients in your Vitamix and enjoy this tangy, detoxing juice!

It’s less than a week after Thanksgiving so I’m still “all about that cleanse!” I really want to help my body get rid of those nasty toxins? This recipe consists of one of nature’s greatest anti-inflammatory ingredients—turmeric. It also has another one of nature’s delicious anti-inflammatory ingredients–pineapple. Add some alkalizing grapefruit and you have a great first-thing-in-the-morning drink. Juice the remaining ingredients, including the additional anti-inflammatory power of ginger, and enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups pineapple, diced
  • 1 pink grapefruit, peeled and sliced
  • ½ cup mint leaves

The Himalayan mountain range can be found across Asia, passing through India, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bhutan and Afghanistan.  Mount Everest is also located in the Himalayan Mountains range and is the highest peak on the planet.  Something else that is contained in this beautiful mountain range is Himalayan salt.  These sea salt beds were once covered with lava, hundreds of millions of years ago, protecting the lava from pollution.  It is some of the purest sales that can be found in the world and it is hand-mined and sold to the world.  The salt is pink because it is energy-rich, loaded with minerals and iron.  The benefits are incredible and many people are just now discovering this natural salt that is charged with intensity and minerals.

Add juice from a half of a lemon

Add in 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

Add a dash of cayenne pepper to the beverage

Directions:

  • Always drink this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach when you first wake up.
  • Stir all of the ingredients together and drink the beverage immediately.
  • It is a good idea to drink this concoction through a straw so that you do not get all of the acids on your teeth that can cause damage, especially if you are drinking this every day.
  • Don’t eat anything else for 10 – 15 minutes so that you allow your body a chance to absorb all of the ingredients.

When you first begin drinking this mixture you may find it very tart and difficult to consume.  If necessary, add in a teaspoon of honey that will add a little bit of sweetness.  As you start to get used to the taste you can start to reduce the honey until you no longer need to add the honey.  This drink has a lot of major health benefits, and your body is going to appreciate it.  You may not like it at first, but once you make it a habit of drinking this daily, you are well on your way to enjoying the health benefits that this elixir provides.

Did you know that on average, every person in the United States consumes around 150 pounds of sugar annually? That is nearly 22 teaspoons of sugar every day! Sugar is almost 20% of the modern diet, and this is the cause of a lot of prevalent diseases worldwide. Flour is another food that we should not be eating. It effectively raises blood sugar more than white sugar does, and don’t fool yourself into thinking whole wheat flour is safe, because it does the same thing.

Sugar = White Death

For years, we have been told that fat is bad for us and that we should follow a diet that is low in fat or that eliminates fat. The truth is that sugar is the real culprit, and it makes people gain weight and become very sick. Science has proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that sugar is the cause of the epidemic of obesity that the United States is currently facing. Sugar is the cause of many serious diseases including dementia, cancer, depression, infertility, impotence, acne, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Is Food Addiction Real?

You might be shocked to learn that sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine! The addiction to flour and sugar is not an eating disorder; it is a biological disorder driven by certain hormones and neurotransmitters that control our sugar and carb cravings and drive us to eat uncontrollably. In a Harvard study, it was found that a regular milkshake (full sugar) spiked blood sugar and insulin and increased sugar cravings. It also caused a spike in the addiction center of the brain. Sugar is the reason about 70 percent of Americans are overweight.

Do you need to Detox from Sugar?

It is important to detox from sugar so that you can regain your health. It takes up to 10 days to break the addiction cycle that carbs and sugar hold over us, damaging our health. You need to make a clear decision to remove sugar from your diet. Remember, there is nothing easy about the process, and the only way to handle your addiction is to stop using sugar. Flour products, sugar and artificial sweeteners all cause increased cravings and slow your metabolism down which causes you to store fat. How do you do this? Don’t eat anything that comes in a can, a box or is processed – eat only whole, fresh and real food and stop eating grains for the first ten days.

Don’t Limit the Carbs you eat

You are going to be eating unlimited carbs – the right kind of carbs. Eat non-starchy vegetables including kale, cauliflower, collards, green beans, zucchini, fennel, asparagus, onions, mushrooms, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, artichokes. Don’t eat potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, beets (only for the first ten days while you detox).

Stop Inflammation

Inflammation leads to imbalances in your blood sugar and causes insulin resistance and can lead to pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. You must stop eating inflammatory foods, and these include sugar, flour, and Trans fats. If you can stop eating gluten and dairy for ten days, you will find that you have renewed energy and will finally be free from cravings. You will see many problematic symptoms disappear.

Eat More Protein

Eating protein at every meal will help to balance your insulin, your blood sugar and eliminate cravings. Protein shakes and whole eggs are great choices as are fish, chicken, seeds, nuts and grass-fed meat. Aim for a serving of between 4 and 6 ounces.

Eat Fat – The Right Fat

You have to change your thinking that fat is bad. Sugar is the real evil here; fat makes you feel full, fuels your cells and puts your blood sugar into the right balance. Ty to eat good fats with every meal and those are avocados, coconut oil, olive oil and omega 3 fatty acids.

Try this Sugar Detox Recipe:

Ingredients:

4-6 large Collard Leaves
1/2 cup Pea Shoots or Sprouts
1/2 cup Purple Cabbage, shredded
1 cup Quinoa, cooked
1 cup Hummus
1 cup Guacamole or Avocado

Instructions:

Take each collard leaf and spread ¼ of the avocado and hummus onto it. Add ½ cup of quinoa to every leaf and then fill it with the remaining items. Roll these up and eat them right away. The cabbage works protect your cells from disease and carcinogens. It also works to detoxify your body and clean out your digestive system by stimulating bowel movements.
