Whole Foods Tropical Green Smoothie Recipe

Whole Foods Tropical Green Smoothie Recipe

I went to Whole Foods the other night after spin class and ended up ordering the best smoothie. It’s their Tropical Green Smoothie! It consists of spinach, coconut water, banana, pineapple, and mango.

I love getting smoothies from juice bars and markets when I’m low on time and groceries, but sometimes I don’t think their smoothies are thick enough. My recipe is a little bit thicker but tastes just like theirs! If you like thick smoothies, you are in the right place! But if you like your smoothies a little thinner, no problem, just add some extra coconut water to the recipe!

Whole Foods Tropical Green Smoothie

1/2 – 1 cup coconut water
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup pineapple
1/2 cup mango
huge handful of spinach

Start with 1/2 cup of coconut water and add more if needed or desired. Blend until creamy and smooth.

Vitamix Blending Tips:
Some of you have asked me what settings I use on my blender.
Vitamix blenders can look intimidating, but they are so easy to use!

  • Start by placing all of the ingredients into the blender, followed by the lid, and plunger.
  • I usually start off on variable 5 as I jam all of the ingredients down with the plunger.
  • Once the ingredients have all been pushed to the bottom, I like to bring the variable speed up to 7 or 8 until it starts moving on it’s own without the plunger.
  • Once the ingredients start blending without the help of the trusty Vitamix plunger, I hit the “HIGH” switch and let it run until it blends super smooth and even!

Kid Friendly Lime Mint Sorbet

Kid Friendly Lime Mint Sorbet

This sorbet is one of those wonderful recipes which tastes delicious and you’d never guess what’s in it.  The beautiful green color comes, not from the lime, but from the spinach!   This is a kid-friendly recipe and a great way to sneak some extra greens into your families diet.  Also, this is dairy-free, so it’s a great frozen treat for people who are lactose intolerant.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Welch’s frozen grape juice concentrate (the one with the yellow lid and no added sugar), thawed
1/2 banana, peeled
1/2 cup fresh or frozen pineapple
1/2 to 1 cup fresh organic spinach leaves ( I use about 3/4 cup)
1 small slice of lime with the peel still on
1 mint leaf
3 cups ice

Put all ingredients into your Vitamix in the order listed.

Blend on high for 45 seconds to 1 minute, pressing down with tamper to blend well.  When the machine sound changes and four mounds form, the sorbet is ready to serve.  Serve immediately.

Turmeric Every Day Keeps Inflammation Away

Turmeric Every Day Keeps Inflammation Away

Turmeric is an amazing, miracle spice. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and can be used to treat bruises, chest pain, jaundice, flatulence, bloody urine, toothache, hemorrhage and colic.  It has a warm flavor that is peppery and bitter with a mild fragrance that is similar to ginger and oranges.  This spice is commonly used to make curry and is added into mustard to give it the brilliant yellow color.

The Curcuma longa plant has orange flesh, and tough brown skin and turmeric comes from its root.  This root has traditionally been used as a condiment, dye for textiles and a remedy that can help to heal.  Curcumin is the pigment of turmeric that has comparable effects to phenylbutazone and hydrocortisone, but it does not produce toxicity.

Curcumin is well-tolerated and effective for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.  Curcumin has also been shown to inhibit major cellular inflammation and neutralize free radicals that travel inside of the body, causing damage to healthy cells and cell membranes.  Free radicals cause painful inflammation including arthritis and the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of curcumin can offer relief to people that suffer this type of pain.

The antioxidant properties of curcumin allow it to help protect cells in the colon from the free radicals that tend to cause damage to cellular DNA.  Another benefit of curcumin is that it helps to destroy mutated cancer cells.  It is believed that the way that curcumin does this is by inhibiting the synthesis of a protein that is needed for tumor formation, and it also enhances liver function.

In a series of epidemiological studies, it has been proven that turmeric can lower rates of colon cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer.  Turmeric can help to prevent the formation of tumors and can slow the spread of cancer cells.  Curcumin acts against transcription factors that regulate the genes that are needed for the formation of tumors.  When genes are turned off, it can help to stop the growth of the cancer cells.

Turmeric lowers cholesterol because curcumin is a messaging molecule that can communicate with liver cell genes and direct them to produce messenger proteins that can cause receptors to be created for LDL cholesterol.

How can you consume turmeric?

  • Mix it in with your egg salad to get a nice bright yellow color;
  • Perfect in any recipe that calls for lentils;
  • Slice cauliflower florets in half and sauté with turmeric for five minutes then remove from heat and toss it together with salt, pepper, and olive oil.
  • Mix cashews, raisins and brown rice together with cumin, turmeric, and coriander.
  • Add extra turmeric in when you are preparing a curry or use it on green beans, steamed cauliflower or sautéed apples.
  • Mix with dried onion and mayonnaise, pepper and salt;
